Robert LeBlanc, a retired Army general who runs emergency response in this community deep in Cajun country, had not heard of the Church of Scientology before Hurricane Katrina. ...

What LeBlanc needed was someone to run shelters for residents displaced by the storm. When Scientology volunteers showed up and offered help, he happily let them.

"One individual in town raised all kinds of heck about them. I said to him, 'If you are a Christian, all you should care about is the work they're doing,'" LeBlanc said. "They did an outstanding job, and if I needed shelter managers tomorrow, I'd call them first."
